A - Climate Crisis
Otium is a post-growth future community hub, aimed at connecting and entertaining people where smartphones no longer can.
The word 'Otium' means 'free time' in Latin
'A' is a zine created to show and inform the reader about the effects of climate change through the use of illustrations, text, and symbolism.
For this project, I researched symbolism, myths, and facts about snakes to convey my ideas for this zine.
The snake is often used as both a symbol of healing and death, which, paired with the neat blue and white illustrations and the messy red and black sketches, visually conveys what I wanted to express to the viewer.
I created this day in the life comic for our pitch deck, to show the activities would be at the hub.
For this design, I wanted these red and blue pages to interact by designing them to be ripped, revealing the corresponding and similar images underneath.
For most of these pages, I used aligned snakes, along with body parts and bones, to depict the life and death aspects of snake symbolism. I aimed to represent the hopelessness and danger, as well as the hope and potential for healing, associated with climate change.
